Culdcept Saga - Player Decks

(HoF) Scrooged (5 decks)

These 5 decks are ridiculously effective in 1v1 matches. By that, I mean your opponent will have a very hard time getting anything going - or even lapping more than a few times in the whole match. Because of this, I reserved them mostly for our tournaments and leagues, where fierce decks are somewhat more acceptable. I've purposely not posted them before now, because like April said about Freshness and DaBlob (which inspired parts of these)... I really didn't want to play against them (and still don't want to!). Since Culdcept Revolt is on its way to the West, I thought it would be fun to share them with the community.

Scrooged (NRG, 19/6/25)

4 Brass Idol
3 Barbarian
3 Tokebi
4 Hypno Sloth
2 Sakuya
3 Wolverine

2 Boomerang
2 Gaseous Form
2 Spectre's Robe

1 Acid Rain
4 Backward
1 Chariot
3 Crusher
3 Land Drain
4 Pain
1 Refuge
1 Relief
3 Slow
1 Tempest
3 Word of Recall

Scrooged is the first deck I made in this series, and by far the most versatile. It's a fusion of multiple decks - Slowride, Freshness, Rockebi and several others of my own design. Starting life as an all-Fire Land Transfer deck way back in Saga Bowl I (which lost its only match!), it grew into a Fire+Earth version that had about a .500 record, losing virtually every match when facing more aggressive decks. So, I gave it more firepower, but that hurt the LT action a bit. Still not happy, I worked in some G deprivation, but couldn't get it to flow well. Then, fortune smiled... I played a match where my opponent had Brass Idol. I completely dominated that match. I immediately replaced Wind of Hope etc. with the idol, and realized that it gave me plenty of room to work in something else... movement deprivation. A few tests and minor revisions later, I ended up with the monster you see here.

Opponents can forget about rolling the die normally for the most part. Between Hypno Sloth, Backward and Slow, it's 2 steps forward, 2 steps back... and just when they somehow manage to get within range of the castle, Word of Recall warps them back and robs them of their lap, forcing them to start all over again.

While they're struggling to simply walk forward, Wolverine, Land Drain and Pain are steadily siphoning away what little G they do have... they have a very hard time paying for invasions, casting spells, or even simply creating chains. That last part also means that you are grabbing land with ease, which means you're also nickel-and-diming them with small tolls they can't avoid.

Meanwhile, the awesomeness of Tokebi's Land Transfer with some help from Refuge supplies to with all the G you'll ever need to fund the domination. It feels very much like you're playing at 3-4x the speed of your opponent, with all the Immediate creatures and virtually everything being so inexpensive.

Opponent trying to block you with idols? No problem, keep them away with your mass damage spells and by smashing them in battle ASAP. It's easy. Goblins? Smash Goblin's Lair on sight and crush them in battle with whatever you have on hand. Are they running a passive G-generation deck? Push them onto a high toll or 2. Cake.

The only real threat you need to watch out for is yourself. Don't try to do too much on lap 1. Instead, use that lap to lay your groundwork... build your Earth chain within reason while slowing their movement and draining their G. If you have Pain and Brass Idol in your opening hand, your chance of victory is extremely high.

Scrounged (NRB, 19/6/25)

3 Brass Idol
2 Giant Rat
2 Living Claw
3 Lunatic Hare
3 Trap Spider
3 Tokebi
3 Deathquito

2 Abyssal Tome
2 Ring of the Succubus
2 Spectre's Robe

1 Acid Rain
4 Backward
1 Chariot
4 Crusher
3 Land Drain
4 Pain
1 Relief
4 Slow
3 Word of Recall

This version might look familiar to some longtime community members - it's essentially Tightwad fused with Scrooged. Why would I do that, you ask? The metagame. If the match is on a naturally low-G map (like Basisk) and I'm fairly confident my opponent will be using their own deprivation strategy, I need an even less expensive set of cards to play with. Scrounged is very, very cheap... but it's extremely fierce. It's basically a pseudo-Silver Idol deck. Even if they somehow can attack you, it's probably pointless. And of course, all the Paralyzer action with Lunatic Hare + Abyssal Tome / Ring of the Succubus means nothing they have is safe. At all.

Pretty much everything applies as with Scrooged, but the early-game threat is exaggerated because of the low-G map and your opponent's deprivation strategy. Fortunately, Scrounged's overall lower G cost compensates well for these, and you should steadily overcome and eventually dominate the match.

Scorched (NRG, 20/6/24)

3 Brass Idol
3 Barbarian
2 Tokebi
3 Hypno Sloth
2 Sakuya
3 Crimson Vine
2 Jack-o'-Lantern
2 Magma Avatar

2 Counter Amulet
4 Magma Armor

4 Backward
1 Chariot
3 Crusher
3 Land Drain
3 Pain
2 Paralyzer
2 Refuge
1 Relief
3 Slow
2 Word of Recall

This one's ancestry should be obvious, for anybody that knows me and my love for dual-element creatures. :-) It's Magma fused with Scrooged. I wouldn't say it's as solid overall as Scrooged, but it is far more aggressive and powerful on a mid-size map. With your dual-element creatures fueling Magma Armor and your Immediate creatures (especially Sakuya) grabbing huge chunks of Fire and Earth lands to make Magma Avatar ridiculously strong, there really is nothing you can't take away from your opponent... pretty much at will. Also, Jack-o'-Lantern is a great G-stealer for a very low cost.

The main threat to this deck is stalling early-on due to the extra creature prereqs that Jack-o'-Lantern and Magma Avatar have. Use your Immediates to grab a Fire and and Earth land ASAP, and the rest should fall into place. Also, unlike the first two versions, Scorched aims to slow its opponent down and dominate via brute force.

Blobbed (NB, 21/0/29)

4 Bandit
3 Brass Idol
4 Colossus
2 Ahuizotl
4 Bloody Pudding
4 Tarasque

4 Backward
2 Chariot
4 Crusher
4 Hunter's Song
3 Intrusion
4 Pain
4 Paralyzer
4 Slow

As you might imagine, if there's one area Scrooged might struggle with, it would be on small maps. It's very difficult to keep your opponent from lapping when it only takes 4-5 normal die rolls to reach the castle... so, what do you do? You don't try to. You simply make their laps as long as possible and make your creatures very, very hard to deal with. How to do that? Why, the best small-map deck of all time, of course - April's infamous DaBlob. Since her deck is already a G-deprivation nightmare, it was pretty simple to add Brass Idol and the movement deprivation spells. Call this DaBlob 1.5. :-)

Don't go nuts early on in the game. Pick your shots early with Bandit and gain the advantage. Your mission - should you choose to accept it - is to turn the entire map blue and cover it with Bandits and huge Bloody Puddings.

Bogged (NBG, 18/4/28)

3 Brass Idol
1 Ahuizotl
3 Kelpie
3 Swamp Spawn
4 Hypno Sloth
1 Sakuya
3 Wolverine

2 Metamorphose Belt
2 Spiked Shield

4 Backward
1 Chariot
3 Crusher
3 Land Drain
3 Mesozoic Song
4 Pain
2 Refuge
1 Relief
4 Slow
3 Word of Recall

I debated a very long time about posting this deck, and I hope I don't regret it.

This deck has never faced a human opponent (other than testing it against myself - and it dominated me in hilarious fashion, repeatedly). After its first test, I realized that nobody ever deserves this level of abuse. Let me say that again: nobody ever deserves this level of abuse. Your opponent will not lap. Ever. At the same time, this deck - like powerbait's Slowride - makes no attempt at all to mercifully speed the match along. Its whole purpose is to toy with them like a cat with a mouse, while slowly... excruciatingly slowly... winning the match. Have fun torturing the AI with Bogged... but please don't play this on Xbox Live. I'm very happy that a deck this thoroughly mean just isn't possible in Culdcept Revolt. :-)
